Today w00t has for $20 an 8GB USB thumb drive.

W00t charges only $5 for shipping even if you buy 3 (maximum) of these.
What you would use this for is setting up a low-level linux that can boot from the drive. A quick reboot into a system and if the bios isn't protected you can alter it to boot from USB. Next you can gain control or run your tools. One neat utility is having a way to boot up your own system just about anywhere you are. If your own computer is even comprised (virus, trojan, keylogger) then you can use the drive to at least have an active computer.
There are various websites dedicated to usb mini linux setups.
