1. Phishing page. Likely not to work because it is more difficult to perform social engineering with an e-mail account (though not impossible) then with, say, myspace.
2. Keylogger. Probably easier, as you can send a binded pic/file to him which will work, but he will not know that a keylogger also installed invisibly.
3. Find an exploit. You probably don't want to do this. A quick search through milw0rm reveals nothing appealing, and I'm not sure of your experience to find one. If you can, all the better, but it's more illegal and probably more time consuming.
4. Brute force. The most messy way of doing it in your situation. If your friend is smart with passwords, don't bother.
